Saved audio

How long Mouthtype keeps completed recordings, and what is never pruned.

Mouthtype keeps completed recordings for a limited time and size, and you choose both in Settings → General → Saved audio.

SettingChoicesDefault
Age limit14 days, 30 days, 90 days, No age limit90 days
Completed-audio size limit2 GB, 10 GB2 GB

No age limit still has a size limit. A change doesn't delete recordings immediately or interrupt a recording in progress.

Warning

Retention settings don't restore audio previously removed.

What happens at launch

Changes apply to existing completed recordings the next time Mouthtype launches. Startup maintenance:

  1. Selects only known completed dictations before inspecting their WAVs.
  2. Removes expired completed WAVs.
  3. Removes the oldest remaining completed WAVs until they fit the selected size limit.

New archive metadata records the selected expiration date, or no expiration date when there is no age limit. When startup maintenance removes a completed recording, its audio location and expiration are cleared from its database row; its text and statistics remain.

What is never pruned

These are exempt from the completed-audio limits and can use additional storage:

  • Unfinished recordings.
  • Crash-recovery partials.
  • Failed takes available for recovery.
  • Files without a matching completed database record. They aren't assumed completed just because the database doesn't list them as unfinished.

Recovery audio remains available through Saved Recordings; the existing Recover and Discard behavior is unchanged. Discard ends the recovery offer and doesn't promise to delete its audio immediately.

What stays

These controls only affect audio generated by Mouthtype. Dictation text, word timings, saved spellings, phrases and surrounding-text behavior stay unchanged. Audio imported with Transcribe Audio File… stays at its original location and isn't part of this archive.
